wywiady > wywiad 13 13. Chat z Stevem Lukatherem - 27 luty 2005r.ModeratorHello everyone and welcome to the first of what I hope will be many very cool moments here on Toto99. We have a very special guest coming to our chat today who has graciously agreed to do a live interview and answer some Q & A. Moderator To qualify all these requests --- we want to make this a VERY cool experience so that we can do this more in the future. Moderator After we have exhausted the chat on ALBUM NAME, then we will have a chance to do your Q&A ok? So PLEASE PLEASE help us make this work, and it can happen again in the future ok? Moderator THANK YOU ALL FOR LISTENING Moderator No our special guest will be here in about 10 minutes. willthrill hopefully this new album will grab some new interest in the states Sarlic Well I had a cool conversation with Luke about it today. They are SOOOOO jazzed up. He said he feels like he's in high school again. Moderator Sorry for the delay guys. We have arranged this chat with Luke at VERY short notice and we are trying to work through some technical problems right now ............................ Steve_Lukather joined............. Steve_Lukather the first answer is seven inches Moderator ok guys......take it away with the album name suggestions. Ex, Irene, Agent....you all had some good ideas to start us off. Steve_Lukather It’s way too early to tell for an album name, and maybe even a concept. The music dictates what that’s going to be. Bringing back the sword motif is a possibility. It’s always been a good look. Steve_Lukather It’s our good luck charm, and people seem to really relate to it. I guess you could say it’s our stamp. Kerdy A reviewer once said in the newspaper here that coincidently or not: all Toto albums with the sword belonged to the best albums ever. Steve_Lukather Coincidentally Kerdy. We try to do the best we can every time Steve_Lukather Somebody’s favorite album is someone else’s least favorite album. It’s too hard to please everybody. Steve_Lukather Lets get some q & a here please!!!!!!!!! Sarlic How about an update on the record? Steve_Lukather We’ve got 9 songs. Band written songs that are really cool. I really think this is going to be one of our best. I know, we always say that, but I really believe it this time. We’re doing this for fun and love, not for the money. We want to see if we’ve got a great one left in us. There’s a lot of pressure on us to do something great, and we want to rise to the occasion. Steve_Lukather And for the naysayers out there, Paich is VERY VERY involved. Sarlic How would you describe the sound? Steve_Lukather It’s a cross between Isolation and Kingdom of Desire on steroids but with Bobby on vocals. But not quite that either. For instance, instead of doing instrumental songs, we’re incorporating instrument portions into our stuff. We’re losing the normal format. The verse-chorus-verse, etc formula is a tired formula. %%%% we know we’re not going to get on the radio, so we’re taking the handcuffs off. I think it’s very musically fresh. Ana_Maria Sure like "Better World? Steve_Lukather Better World could be a snapshot of this record. I’m really proud of that song. Better World is a great starting point, but we’re taking it to the next level. Guava Steve, who will be in your band at Bospop? Steve_Lukather I will be at Bospop with little solo band. It’s actually the same band I took to Japan but with out Nuno. Steve_Lukather Oscar Cartaya on bass Steve_Lukather Joey Heredia on drums Steve_Lukather Steve Weingard on keys Steve_Lukather A killer %%%%%%% band. It’s Lobotomys on steroids with a Latin groove. mark_ridout Hi Steve, Mark from CANADA, will you play any of the new material in May?? Steve_Lukather The new material is not finished yet. Lyrics still have to be written and all kinds of stuff. Once we finish the songs, later in the year when we do dates we will add some of them in to get a feel for it. I’m really excited to because we’ve got some great stuff. You have to remember, we’re only two weeks in to writing the record now. So the answer is no, probably not in May. TOTORENE STEVE I LOVE YOU MAN! Steve_Lukather I love you too man! Steve_Lukather Thanks for the love, back atcha all a thousand times. Sarlic How much has Greg contributed to the writing? Steve_Lukather He really hasn't yet. Dave is still the man. Greg's messed with some of the demos. He comes down and hangs and plays a bit and gives input but we haven't written a piece of with him yet. Steve_Lukather But I mean, we’re writing 30 songs and picking the best 10, and both Greg AND Steve Porcaro will be involved. Steve_Lukather No idea about guests on the record. I’m sure there will be a few, like Lenny Castro. His percussion is awesome and adds some great flavor. I’m sure we’ll have a few cool cats come in for some backing vocals. But as far as Musicians and guest writers? We’re talking about having Wayne Short. And also remember, we are NOT making a Jazz Record here. We’re taking all of our influences and throwing everything it. But it’s a Rock N Roll record! Steve_Lukather But you can’t squeeze it into straight Rock N Roll either. Just when you thought you knew what was going on, its gonna take a left turn. There’s a beautiful ballad we have that opens up a piece. We're so fired up!! But then, the ballad turns into something wacky, much harder edged. There will be a LOT of keys on this record, not just a big Luke solo. And we’ve really got some adult riffs. It doesn’t sound like anyone else. It sounds like us at our finest. We’re really proud so far. Steve_Lukather And sonically, this album is going to be amazing. We’re going to do it in a 5.1 mix. That’s the way this record has to be listened to. I think it may be very Pink Floydish, but with even more funky stuff spread in. There may be sections of some of these tracks where it’s just several bars of maybe one of us talking. Like I said, left turn. Will Luke, can you tell us about Toto's general plans for the summer tours this year? The fans appreciate that no dates have yet been confirmed. Steve_Lukather Summer tour -- we're doing a few things. South Africa has to be postponed. We’re going to probably do a Symphony Show there, as well as something to help raise money for the Tsunami disaster victims. And, we’re really trying to break into the US. We have a new agent who’s getting us some great stuff, so we’re really hoping to re-establish ourselves there. Sarlic What about some more symphony gigs in the US? Steve_Lukather Definitely. We’re playing a gig in San Diego. The symphony gigs are really cool for exposing people to our music who generally wouldn’t listen to it. It opens the door for some new fans and all kinds of possibilities. Steve_Lukather But, we will have a massive world tour in 2006 when the new record's out. The Good News: I have work for the next 3 or 4 years hahahahahahah Will Luke, apart from Randy Goodrum, who else do you hope to be writing with for the new album? Are we likely to see a Tom Kelly collaboration or perhaps his backing vocals? Steve_Lukather Randy and I have already written a few pieces. He’s one of my favorite song-writing partners. He’s ALWAYS a part of the team. And I just got back in touch with Tom Kelly, thanks to Will! I’m having dinner with the cat next week. Man, the power of the Internet! I haven’t seen the cat in I can’t even remember how long, and because of all this e-mail stuff, we’re back in touch! I’d love to have Tom come in and do some backing vox and write a tune or two. spainbooters Besides the Europeans dates are u planning to have few dates in South America?? Steve_Lukather We're definitely trying to get back into South America. The audiences have been huge, the response really positive. But it’s a matter of routing, as gigs all come in through our agents. We can’t just do one show down there. It’s expensive to go out on the road. We have to do a full tour. Otherwise financially, it just doesn’t make sense. Steve_Lukather It’s great we have loyal fans all over the world, people that dig our stuff. Everywhere but the US and the UK! But you know it’s hard for bands to hold the spotlight in those countries for very long. Remember the Spice Girls? Hahahahahaha So the answer: we will hit every place in the world we possibly can. Kerdy Does the Eagle Rock contract leave space for a new DVD or is a DVD for each tour to expensive? Steve_Lukather The DVD was a one off. We don't have any plans for another at the moment. But, we’ve got some really cool stuff in the works. We’re in the process of getting a Toto Network together with my pal Scotty Page. We want to make it so that you can watch the shows live, watch us in the studio live, check out the backstage vibe live. It’s going to be really intense. But like I said, in development and that’s all I can really say about it at this point. Will Luke: Do you have any ideas for lyrics or are you still working on progressions and melodies? Steve_Lukather We have ideas for lyrics, but only just starting to write them. The music must always come first, however. TOTORENE Steve, will Toto release the new album with a new record company? Steve_Lukather We don't want to be with a major record company. But we’re going to make the record first and worry about that later. Right now we only have some rough demos, though they’re basically good enough to go on the record! But we’re going to re-record everything later. We’re doing it down and dirty and fast right now. Danielwantsgroove Is Si doing the mixing on this album? Steve_Lukather Simon will be very involved in the engineering. My friend Phil Soussan will be very involved while we record as well. But once we’re out of the studio for the final mix, we’ll bring in someone ridiculously cool. But Simon’s new studio is awesome. Great room, great sound, and it’s right in the middle of where we all live. I’m furthest away from the south, and Paich from the north. So we all just meet in the center. It used to be Shelia E’s place! bobby Are u going to use more e-guitars on the record or only one? Steve_Lukather I will use mainly my Musicman Luke on the record. But I just did a Les Paul record and broke out my 59 Sunburst. But I want to use everything I’ve got. But mostly the Musicman. Same with my amps - I’ll stick mainly to my Bradshaw stuff. Kerdy Luke, in the beginning of this chat you told us that you and the other band members feel pressure to do something "great". Do you think it's fair that you guys still need to feel that pressure after all you've achieved. Or is it the kind of pressure you feel each time before creating something new? Steve_Lukather Kerdy -- there's always pressure. We put pressure on ourselves. But it’s a more positive pressure. We try to do the best we can every time. In other words, we’re not getting lazy! We’re getting the opposite! We’re very inspired. We’re pissed off and we’re gonna show these %%%%%%%%%%%%% where we’re at! We’re gonna throw down. And STILL some people will hate it hahahahahaha But hey, I’m having plastic surgery so I can look just like Fergie. Lisa hahaha Just as long as David isn't getting plastic surgery :P Steve_Lukather Dave's sex change is coming along fantastic but he's still the ugliest chick I've ever seen spainbooters What about ur concert with the San Diego Symphony?? Steve_Lukather I do not know who the special guest will be at the San Diego gig. That’s all going to be done through a promoter. JPDrum82 Hi Luke..... Has Los Lobotomys become a non entity considering the doings of Garfield and Pena? Steve_Lukather Garfield should never have put the Los Lobotomys album out. It was more of the same. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad record at all. But we should have done something as the four of us, not 2 just to make a fast buck. He did it despite the fact that Simon and I said no at least 3 times. He made all the money. I haven’t seen a penny. Sarlic Any chance that Los Lobotomys will ever play together again? Steve_Lukather At this point no for Lobotomys. Kerdy Recently your Star Lick master session was rereleased on DVD. Did you like it, seeing a young version of you. I've seen you almost not wanting to sign a banner of the "young" Luke once hahaha. Any plans on doing something like the master sessions again? Steve_Lukather Master-session???????????? 20 years ago. Torturous to watch. But enjoy it if you will!! I don’t think I’ll ever do something like that again. I gave my one less on tape. Now I just need to learn how to play. ahahhahahah Agent_Thermal My SERIOUS questions haven't been heeded, so what difference does it make? Steve_Lukather What was your question Agent? Agent_Thermal Oh, so many! Steve_Lukather ask, ask all! Agent_Thermal Let's see - would a re-recording of an older Toto song perhaps be a consideration on this album? Steve_Lukather Agent -- maybe, but for licensing purposes so that we own it. But definitely not for the new album. I’m not looking forward to re-recording Hold the Line. I recorded that stuff when I was 19. Maybe some new studio versions if it’s financially viable for us. But the drag is you can never go back and recopy the original vibe. But who knows. I think we should let history be history. But you never know. I’m not too proud to take a big fat check! hahahahah Gizmo It's some we all discuss on the board, why not re-record some tracks from Isolation with Bobby on vocals Steve_Lukather No talk of that Gizmo. I mean, what’s the point? We play the %%%% live so it’s cool. But Bobby is also getting plastic surgery to look just like Fergie, like I am. Holyanna If you're going to look like Fergie, I think I'm no longer a Toto fan... :( Steve_Lukather If you think looking life Fergie is bad wait till you see my new vagina Kerdy The new album sounds a bit like a big Rock Opera? Am I right, and if so, does a theater tour makes sense? Steve_Lukather Kerdy -- no rock opera. I don’t even know what that is ahahhaahhaha. But hey, I can’t predict the future. As far as the Theatre tour thing. Who knows, maybe that’s something we could look into in the States. But I’m not putting my Pavarotti outfit on and going out on stage! Jaimie Hey Luke, how long are you staying in Holland, when you're playing Bospop? Steve_Lukather Jaimie -- just a day or so. My band and I are doing 2 weeks and then I’m joining up with the Toto guys for a week of Festivals. Will Luke, can you tell us about your recent Les Paul collaboration? He is one of the biggest legends in the music business! Steve_Lukather Les Paul tribute..... Just did it last week. Did it with some guests and a really cool vibe. kristinaschildren Okay-so what about Joseph Williams? Never ever coming back??????? Steve_Lukather Joe Williams return to the band -- no. Work together, maybe. There’s a much better chance with him than Fergie or Byron! Joe’s a great friend, and he’s very successful scoring TV and stuff. We don’t currently have anything in the works, but anything could happen. Elias Luke, Can you tell what it was like recording with Don Henley? The song "Dirty Laundry". I’m a Henley fan as well. Steve_Lukather Don Henley - great. Man, that was a lot of fun. Definitely one of my favorite sessions ever. We had double drums going on that track with Jeff and Don. And then when they asked me to play on the Solo, I was so jazzed because Joe Walsh was on it, one of my all time heroes. I threw that down in one or two takes. Don is one of the greatest singers of all time, and he’s a great friend. I’m a huge fan of his. Will Luke, could you tell us about your opening night at "We Will Rock You" in Vegas? Steve_Lukather We Will Rock You --- Brian and Roger are like old friends. One of the greatest rock bands ever, Queen. They asked me to jam for opening night, and I was with one hell of a band. Vai, Meatloaf, Glenn Hughes, Brian and Roger, and too many others to name that I’ve forgotten! It was an amazing show. I’m telling you, run and get tickets now. It’s an incredible production, and it was an honor to play. Kerdy The rhetorical question: will it be Toto's last big effort? I mean, I'm quite sure I'll see you perform in a wheelchair at your nineties, whilst I tell my grandchildren that they are looking to the best guitarist the world ever had. But I do have the feeling that Toto isn't a band full with people who still like to entertain when they are really old haha. Steve_Lukather Toto's last record ---?????????? I don't want to say that. If people are digging the Toto vibe, we’ll keep doing it. We’re at a point in our career where we’re able to make money and be creative at the same time. So no. I don’t want to think this will be our last. I don’t think so. There were other times I said it was the end, but we’ve grown. We’re like family, and we love working together. Of course there are rough times, it’s just like being married. But you don’t walk away from love man. I love going on the road and playing our music with these guys and just being able to be apart of this. It’s a great %%%%%%% job. Will Luke, do you hope to tour with Nuno Bettencourt again in the future? How was that trip? Steve_Lukather Nuno -- would LOVE to tour with him again, but he’s got his own band, so it’s tough. He’s a %%%%%%% awesome player, and a class act. A really cool cat, and I’m a huge fan. I’m sure we’ll work together again. We’re friends, and I can’t see any reason why not to. Will And possibly another collaboration with Larry Carlton? Steve_Lukather Carlton -- down the line, oh yes. He’s so busy between Four Play and his solo stuff though, so it’s all scheduling. But, definitely! I mean, we won a Grammy! We gotta revisit that vibe. He’s one of my all time heroes, and truly one of the greatest guitar players ever. Nothing but love and respond there. Down the line, for sure. I’m starting my own band called Fore Skin. hahahahahahah Ana_Maria And what's Eddie doing these days? There may be another Grammy there for you guys Steve_Lukather Eddie VH -- spoke to him night before last. He’s in great form, and he sounded great. I spoke with Alex too. Alex is a really deep guy spiritually, and I really connect with him on that level. There’s talk of us doing a side project together just for laughs. Maybe some kind of gettogether to jam and see what happens, but NO, I’m NOT joining Van Halen! Hahahahahah Alex and Eddie have been my soul brothers since the 70s. Eddie is one the best in the world, and Alex is a pure genius. Definitely the brains behind the operation. bobby Luke, do u have a favorite Hendrix song?? Steve_Lukather Fave Hendrix Song..... man. That’s an impossible question to answer. I guess anything that Jimi recorded in the studio.but not the bootlegs where it was all one long acid trip ahahahhaha. Seriously though, everything Jimi did was special and unique. Everything about him man, the depth of the scene is amazing. And 40 years later it’s holding up. That’s the test of true genius at work. Jaimie Hey Luke! When you guys are back in Holland, would you like to do a workshop/carreerclinic at my school, Conservatory of Amsterdam? It’s a Music Academy and it’s full of Toto-fans! If -YES- who should I contact? Steve_Lukather I'm flattered that you ask to do a clinic, but I'm a student myself! I don’t really do that kind of stuff, but perhaps I’ll come and take some lessons at your school! Steve_Lukather All right guys, I’ve gotta go. We’re definitely gonna do this again. Nothing but love and respect! Moderator Special thanks to Luke for taking the time to visit with us today. Thanks again, brother, and we’ll see you next time! And thanks to all the fans for participating in today’s chat! ............................ Steve_Lukather left............. www.toto99.com | |
